Royal Australian Air Force’s Base Richmond is a military air base located within the City of Hawkesbury, approximately 50km northwest of Sydney, New South Wales.

We were engaged by Duratec Australia to construct a new 1080m2 roofing canopy and 300m2 of cladding for the Aviation Refuelling Vehicle Facilities, as the conditions of the refuelling tanks were uncovered and exposed to the outdoor elements. The new canopy would provide clear and clean access for the tankers to be refuelled.

The scope of works included construction of a covered canopy with three open sides. Products installed included .48 Colorbond spandek for both the roof and walls, safety mesh and HD sisalation, Colorbond 300mm half round gutter with 150mm downpipes, Colorbond flashings and bird netting.

A 54ft Diesel Scissor lift, 80ft Boom and 100t crane were used throughout the project. The 100t crane required a permit to use on site due to works being in the flight path of aircraft operating at the Base.

The roof was 7m high, requiring safe work methodologies for working at heights to be implemented. These included the use of elevated work platforms, installation of temporary hand rails and safety mesh, and upskilling and qualifying trainees on the project in working at heights.
The project workforce peaked at four personnel, two of which were Indigenous employees, achieving 45% Indigenous participation.
